Friend Friday: To Plan or Not To Plan

January 14, 2011

By Katrice

What a perfect opportunity to kick off my Friend Friday posts ... a blog dedicated to my favorite pastime -- outfit planning (or as I call it: playing dress up). If you're not in the habit of planning your outfits in advance, you're missing out on an extra 15 minutes of sleep in the morning. Good times.

Thanks to Modly Chic for creating the Friend Beauty Friend Friday as a way for fashion and beauty bloggers to get acquainted and the ever-fabulous Stylish Thought for enlightening me about it.

1. How do you determine what you will wear that day?
I am definitely the quintessential outfit planner. One of my favorite things to do in my free time is to get into my closet and start rethinking the way I've worn certain articles of clothing or shoes. It all begins with a handbag. More than half of my outfits are decided by a handbag I want to carry.

2. Do you plan outfits out in advance for a whole week, month, weekend?

I pre-plan for a whole week and typically do so when I know my schedule will be more hectic than usual. It's a must when I'm going into production for our next issue at work, have events or blog appointments.

3. Do you have any specific way of tracking outfits and items already worn so you don't repeat?
I don't have a particular system of tracking. I just make a mental note.

4. How do you discover new combinations of items in your closet?
Outfit planning is like a party in my apartment. I turn on some music and spend a couple hours going through my closet and drawers playing dress up. I only started pre-planning what I'll wear -- while doing it -- within the last couple years. It's my way of weeding out what needs to be donated or consigned, what I've forgotten about, what's out of my taste and how well things fit. Whenever I find a combination I really love, I hang the items together in the closet. If it's something I want to wear that week, I hang it on the outside of the closet door along with shoes and accessories.

5. To streamline the process for 2011, what is one new thing you can do to cut down your dressing time?
While I'm good at pre-planning, there are a couple things that are just necessary this year. One: I have to embrace the "less is more" line of thinking for my wardrobe. Every free minute I have, I am editing and re-editing my closet. I've already been to the consignment shop and Goodwill to make drop-offs twice this year. Two: Ironing everything I set aside for the week in advance instead of the morning I'll be wearing it. That would be a fantastic time saver for me.

When you plan, are you using a spreadsheet? or just writing items down?

  6. I love this post! I am an advocate for pre-planning. Every season I rummage thru the closet to pull a new viewpoint of attire transformation...and it helps me with my trendy shopping....Every week I check out the weather channel & then attempt to coordinate my efforts. Whenever I dont do this - I look like a total mess so I have embraced the process. I LOVE IT! And yes I have a three year old! Sunday nights are my me time to spend with one of my first loves - clothes.

  7. Ha! I just don't iron, but I suppose your way is better....

I love that you are always editing and reediting your closet. It's probably much easier to get dressed that way.

  8. Yes! Playing dress up is one of my favorite things to do ;-) it's so thrilling to go through your wardrobe and find unique combinations you didn't know existed.
I have to get better with planning outfits though, it's definitely something I'm working on for 2011!
